Arambagh has its historical background since the days of 2nd Chandragupta Mourjya. Constituted in the year, 1886, Arambagh Municipality now having 18 Wards is one of the oldest Municipalities in the District of Hooghly. Being situated within rural area, based on Agricultural activities, it have had very important role for service provider to the hinterlands. Urbanization in this Municipality has gathered momentum in recent past. Situated in the north western part of the district Hooghly, the Sub- division town Arambagh is the functional gateway of pilgrimage to Kamarpukur (14 km.), the birth place of the prophet Sri Sri Ramkrishnadeb; Joyrambati (19 km.), the birth place of Sri Sri Saradadebi; Radhanagar (37 km.), the birth place of Bharat Pathik Raja Rammohan Roy, the great Social reformer; and ancient temple town, Bishnupur (54 km.). Birsingha in Paschim Medinipur- the home of Vidyasagar is also well close to Arambagh Municipality. Great Novelist, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote his famous novel “Durgesh Nandini” on Garh-Mandaran (a historical place of interest- 16 km. away), while he was S.D.O., Arambagh. The importance of these places as world famous religions and tourist spot is successively increasing.
